What this calculator assumes, covers, excludes, and when not to use it:
- Assumes: Forecasts are accurate for the school day (typically 6 AM–3 PM). Uses a simplified model based on U.S. school district behavior, weighted toward temperature ≤32°F, snowfall ≥1″, and wind ≥15 mph.
- Covers: Public K-12 school districts in the contiguous U.S. with typical winter weather patterns.
- Excludes: Private schools, universities, early dismissals, delayed starts, virtual school days, or closures due to ice, extreme cold without snow, or non-weather emergencies.
- Do not use: For life-safety decisions, travel planning, or as a substitute for official announcements. Not valid outside the U.S. or for districts with unique policies (e.g., mountain schools with high snow tolerance).
How the probability is calculated
The score is a weighted sum of four normalized factors:
- Temperature factor: 0% at 40°F, 100% at 20°F, linear in between. Below 20°F remains 100%. Above 40°F is 0%.
- Precipitation factor: 0% at 0″, 100% at 8″, linear in between. Above 8″ remains 100%.
- Wind factor: 0% at 0 mph, 50% at 25 mph, 100% at 40 mph, linear in between.
- District tolerance: Low = 0.8x weight, Medium = 1.0x, High = 1.2x.
The final probability = (0.35 × Temp + 0.40 × Precip + 0.20 × Wind + 0.05 × Tolerance) × District Multiplier, capped at 100%.

When forecasts can mislead
Timing matters more than totals: A forecast of 6″ overnight may close schools, while 6″ falling after dismissal may not. Always check the timing of precipitation in the hourly forecast. This calculator assumes snow falls during school hours; if it starts after, the probability may be overestimated.
Ice is worse than snow: Freezing rain or sleet can cause closures at lower accumulation thresholds (e.g., 0.25″ of ice vs. 2″ of snow). This tool does not account for ice—if ice is forecast, treat the precipitation input as 2–4× the actual ice accumulation for a rough estimate.
District-specific thresholds: Some districts close at 2″ of snow, others at 10″. If your district has a published threshold (e.g., “closes at 4″ or more”), use the “High” tolerance setting for a closer match. Without this, the default “Medium” may over- or under-estimate.
Unusual but real scenarios
Blizzard with little snow: High winds (e.g., 40 mph) with only 1–2″ of snow can still close schools due to whiteout conditions. In this case, the wind factor may dominate the score, producing a high probability despite low precipitation.
Warm snow: If temperatures are above freezing (e.g., 35°F) but snow is still forecast, it may melt on contact or accumulate less. The temperature factor will reduce the probability, but if the district has a low tolerance, the result may still be moderate.
